ISO 9002:
The ISO (International organisation for standardisation) has recognised the need has recognised the need for harmonisation of various quality standards used world wide, has issued the ISO 9000 series of standards in 1987. The ISO 9000 series was revised and reissued in 1994 and is due to be reissued again in the year 2000.

The standards especially ISO 9001, 9002 and 9003 are for external quality assurance. They state the requirements a quality system has to contain but not how they are to be implemented. They are generic and independent of any specific industry or economic sector. They are intended to be used in their present form but can be tailored to suit a company's individual needs.

ISO 9000 helps to :-
 Rationalise systems and procedures
 Cut Costs
 Improve efficiency
 Ensure consistency in product and services
 Add a competitive edge
 Project a positive public image
 Enhance customer focus
However a question arises Is ISO 9000 really that wonderful? Quality assurance should be common sense management applied to achieving and maintaining quality.
